Great Outhouse Blowout logo

The 1998 Great Outhouse Blowout was almost the Great Outhouse WASHOUT. Rain dampened the festivities, but not the spirits of those who brought their umbrellas to watch the outhouse races. Heavy rains all morning forced the cancellation of the music portion of the festivities. But the racers were determined to race!

The rain let up enough about 12 noon so that we could have the "Parade of Privies" and start the races. The rain continued off and on in a light mist, but that did not stop the racers. Two at a time they raced down the "sloppy" track until one of the 8 would be declared the winner.

This year's winner was "The Crushers" sponsored by Cardinal Stone of Independence, Virginia.
Second Place went to "Little South #2" sponsored by Tarter Gate of Dunnville, Kentucky.
Third place went to "The Jolly Johns" of Mercer Co., Kentucky.

Certain awards and honors are bestowed each year. This year was no exception.

  • The Crescent Moon Award is presented to the person who contributes to the promotion and preservation of the outhouse "with dignity". This year's winner was . . . Bob Ross of Bozeman, Montana for his "Muddled Meanderings" book series about outhouses.
  • The Golden Throne Award is presented to that public figure who has exemplified independence, conviction, and courage in adverse conditions, yet has not lost their sense of humor. This year's winner was . . . Steve Levy of Louisville, KY for his "Do It Yourself" show on WHAS radio.
  • The Moon & Stars Award is presented to that entertainer whose works have brought the outhouse to public attention. This year's winner was . . . John Stossel of ABC Television's 20/20 program for his report on the $300,000 outhouse.

We wish to thank all of the teams who participated in this years race. They were all good sports and had a great time. We also want to thank the faithful spectators who braved the rain to watch outhouses race.

Thank you to all of our sponsors for this year's event. Without their help, we could not hold this event. Please show your thanks to them by patronizing their businesses.
