The photo above was taken around 2:00pm Sunday afternoon, May 2, 2010 from the Elder Cemetery.   Viewing again at 5:00pm from the Elder Cemetery, waters had risen and were almost touching the porch roof of Penn's Store.

Also at the 5:00 pm viewing ...  in the above photo (where the round bale of hay is located near electric pole) ... we watched as 2 cows were washed in with the flood waters and made their way to the bale of hay.  They were still there when we left around 6:30 pm.

At 1:00am Monday morning, May 3, waters had receded from Hwy 243 ... where one turns to Penn's Store Road and at the junction of Hwy 243 & Hwy 37 allowing traffic to go into Boyle and Marion counties.

 FLOOD UPDATES

We are having a big flood here.  Biggest since 1992 when we dedicated outhouse ... at that time water was to top of counters in Store .... if rain keeps falling it may be as big or bigger than then.

From my house I cannot even get to Penn's Store ... Dawn went and checked about an hour ago ... you can get just past the Elder Cemetery sign ... you cannot get to Boyle County from here now.  Flood waters are across HWY 243 near big bridge at junction of 243 & 37 / Boyle/ Casey Line.

Water is already going into the Store ... thanks to Tammy & Kirk WIlliams that live up the little gravel road that goes to the left of Penn's Store ... they rescued a momma cat & kittens from the barrel on porch of Store ...( barrel already filling with water)  ... water was as of 30 minutes ago( when they got cat & kittens)  6-8 inches on the porch of Penn's Store and going in.

Boston and Dixie and puppies were rescued by Kirk also.  He found them out in flood waters playing.  He has taken all to his house on hill .   All my flowers for 2010 Kentucky Writers Day have been washed away as well and the spool tables and barrels.  The entire field & area in front of Store is solid water.  It was as of 30 minutes ago at the bottom of all the mailboxes.  And it is still raining.

Hope all is okay with all of you.  Jeanne

Damages at Store ... OVERWHELMING!   Basically everything around the store building & porch of store - gone.  I had $200+ of flowers (from our event the weekend before & were to be planted) - gone.  All heavy spool tables - gone.  Even a huge fuel tank (to be brought to farm) - gone.   Our wood pile (stored from last year's ice storm, to season) - gone.   The floor boards in side storage room were ripped up!  It looks as if a tornado hit the entire inside area of store.  One CANNOT even get into side room area for all the debris.    An old huge kerosene tank that held kerosene when my grandmother sold it for lamps ... and was in the side storage room at store ...  was tossed like a match and evidently there was some left inside and spilled out.  Now all smells like a mix of flood mud and kerosene.  AWFUL!  Made me sicky Monday.     Hot & steamy in store with all that smell.   The smell and my heart condition don't mix well.  Too much for one person to clean.  I have basically camped out there last 2 days.  Local man yesterday removed a HUGE tree left behind in our hay field for me with front loader on tractor.  Thankful.    Debris all caught by tree line between store on North Rolling Fork River..... there is even a BOAT!!!

The road to the right of Penn's Store (Rawlings Road) slipped off in 3 places and totally closed the road.  Boyle County highway crews worked all Monday removing the slides.  They said they had to work slow as it was very dangerous.  Earth soft and they were afraid more would fall.   It is only a dirt/mud road now.  They have yet to gravel.

All animals seem to be a little confused.  Thanks to Tammy & Kirk Williams the Labs were rescued from flood waters and they saved a momma cat and her kittens from the oak barrel on the porch.  At that time, there was 6-8 inches of water already covering the porch.  (They have great pics and a video of flood.)

However ... a momma cat had kittens in the side room (they could not break the door in)  ... kittens are all dead.... momma was covered in the kerosene water mix ... I brought her home and washed her Monday ... she is still wobbly and sicky like.  Don't know if she will make it.   My male Lab pup had an allergic reaction to flea drops ... that I had put on him night before flood began.  Am dealing with that. Talked with vet office ... Washed him best I could when first discovered ... little water ( our water comes from Liberty and town was almost washed away)   plus a water line broke a few miles away and have a tiny stream flowing ...have pup on Benadryl.

My 18 year old cockapoo Bailey passed on during the flood.  He is now buried.

The 130+ year old house that Dawn is redoing on farm here had tons of leaks from roof ... from where mason people working on chimney had pulled back the roof .. they had just finished the chimney day before rains began.  Roofer had no time to put new roof on.  SO ... she is dealing with water damage there.

Danville paper called today and asked what we needed most.  Told him PEOPLE to help get all out of the store so we can asses the damages to see even if possible to repair.   Inter County has told me that all plug-ins under water will need to be redone.

* INTERESTING NOTE:  I had left a lamp on (plugged in to a power strip on floor) and also left the radio on ... plugged in to the over head light when I left out Saturday evening.  When Dawn finally got the store door open on Monday ( all chairs were pushed against the door on inside) and walked in ... with water still on floor ... the lamp was still ON and radio going!!  Power strip did NOT trip even underwater.   She decided to turn off breaker.  Luck she wasn't electrocuted!   So ... an electrician will be needed.  Meantime ... as not able to see without lights ... we turned the overhead light on a breaker box.  And yesterday I turned on AC (so as to use fan part).  Had on rubber boots.  Seems I live in rubber boots anymore.

There are so MANY things to deal with it is overpowering.   No phone at store ... both the cordless and land line phones were under water.  Refrigerator shot.  Drink box not working.  Will try ASAP ( have to plug it in to a wall socket.  That's the problem.)   Am hoping to make run into town today to get a phone.

That's an update snippet.  Just thankful; it is no worse than it is.  It could have washed the store away!

Wednesday Night 5/5/2010

 *  Gray momma CAT didn't make it.  I found her dead on store porch on blanket today.   SO ... a funeral tomorrow.

*  Got a PHONE today ... cheap land line.  Hooked it up tonight.  It works.  Not good being there alone without a phone.

*  We now have WATER.  It went to none yesterday.  Had been a pencil stream ... then nothing.  Not much pressure but one can wash hands.  I called Water District today and they said all main lines (from lake to outlying tanks) had broken,  Thus, no water in tanks.  Perhaps pressure will increase as tanks fill.

*   5/6/10 ... Today water is back to less than a pencil.

*  RAIN and T' STORMS are now forecasted for Friday.  Ugh!   One of the problems we have is getting everything out of the store and WHERE TO PUT IT!   We can't leave it outside.
